5 Fun Activities for Bonding with Co-Workers
April 29th, 2011 by Juliana Weiss-Roessler  Posted in Career Advice, In the Workplace

istock_000010983802xsmall40 hours. The typical American work week. Already that’s almost a quarter of your life spent at work, and as many of us can testify, that’s on the low end. Work weeks of 50, 60, or even more hours aren’t that uncommon - especially when you’re starting out and trying to prove yourself. And since we’re spending far more time with the people in the cubicles around us than our friends and family, getting to know and befriend our coworkers can make those long hours at work pass by much faster.

1. Drinking

Tough day at the office? Invite your coworkers out to the local bar. There are few quicker ways to really get to know people than knocking back a few beers and blowing off steam together. Some offices even have organized drinking nights, beer clubs, or similar groups. Be sure to select a designated driver in advance or arrange for cabs to pick you up.

2. Office Olympics

Okay, maybe “Olympics” is a bit of a stretch, but playing games around the office with your coworkers is a great way to chase the boredom away. And if the boss catches you, just say you’re doing team building exercises. Feel free to invent your own games, but some old favorites include Paper Football, Pencil Pop, Paper Airplanes, Grasshopper, and Nerf Melee.

3. Sports League

Organizing some kind of sports league is a great way to bond with your coworkers. Ask around to see what people are interested in, or just pick your favorite sport and try to get people to sign up. It doesn’t matter what the sport is - baseball, bowling, football, or hopscotch - as long as it allows you to hang out and get to know the people around you. You can pit different divisions at your office against each other if you work at a big company, or play against other offices in your area for supremacy.

4. Chain Gang

Basically, this is just a glorified way of saying you should go out to lunch with your coworkers, but if you’re in an area with a lot of big restaurants, this could be fun. Have people sign up for a restaurant group, and each day or week one person picks the place to eat. You’ll get a nice lunch out with coworkers, discover new lunch spots in the area, and learn a little bit about the kinds of things they like.

5. Board Lunch

In the spirit of organizing things, one fun group activity is choosing a day each week to bring in games and play them while you eat. Usually this is done with board games - hence the name Board Lunch - but it can just as easily be done with card games or portable video games. The best way to keep it fair is to alternate who brings in the games each week and give everyone a chance.

What fun things do you do to bond with your coworkers?
