Job Search Networking on LinkedIn - 15 LinkedIn Groups You Should Join

networking-online-linkedinIt is no secret that online networking through websites like LinkedIn is a very important part of any job search campaign and opens doors for new opportunities. Networking is not necessarily about finding a job right away; it is about connecting with people with common interests who may help you later when an opportunity arises.

One of the best and most effective ways to network on LinkedIn is by helping others, interacting with other members of the community, engaging in discussions, answering questions, etc. Your new connections will often help you in return. As we say “what goes around comes around”.

If you are new to LinkedIn or don’t know where to start, please make sure to read our article: LinkedIn and Your Job Search – Practical Advice for Job Searching Using LinkedIn.

If you know your way around LinkedIn, you probably know that one of the best ways to network with others on LinkedIn is through joining Groups.  LinkedIn Groups consist of LinkedIn members with common interests and could be a great resource as well as a good way to meet new people. Once accepted to a group (you have to request to join in the most groups), start talking to others: post an introduction, initiate discussions, answer other group members’ questions, etc.

When posting an introductory message, do it under Discussions but check the group rules first (some don’t allow it).  Mention your background, experience, as well as your goals and make sure to mention that you are open to new connections. You will be surprised to see how many people will connect with you. Also, by having an interaction with anyone in the group, for example responding to their post, or having them respond to yours, you essentially get to “know” that person and can safely send an invitation to connect with them without violating LinkedIn rules.

Mark, almost all large groups have subgroups, focusing on specific country. For example Jobs 2.0 – Jobs Search & Networking has a subgroup http://www.linkedin.com/groupInvitation?gid=246...
  • Mark Hiltz
Of the 15 LinkedIn sites that you list, can you identify which ones are Canadian specific? Thanks.
  • Thank you very much for the useful information!
