Most job seekers take time off between Thanksgiving and New Year’s when companies and recruiters typically slow down their hiring efforts. During holidays everybody is too busy buying gifts, decorating houses, sending out holiday greeting cards. A lot of people don’t even think that it is a great time for the job search.
Here are a few reasons why you should actively look for work during the holidays:
1. Less competition. Since most job seekers put their job search on hold, that’s good news for you! This can result in fewer applications for non seasonal work and opportunity for you to get noticed by potential employers seeking full time employees for the coming year.
2. HR managers are not so busy. Many employees will take time off leaving the hiring managers to fill in. This allows managers to spend more time interviewing candidates.
3. Event gatherings. This time of the year equals greater opportunities for socializing and networking. If your friends and extended family don’t know that you are looking for a job, let them know, casually, at holiday events. Use these get together as an opportunity to let people know that you are job hunting. Briefly discuss your career with people during these networking opportunities, and be sure to follow up with each person you meet.
4. The holiday spirit. We are all happier on holidays, aren’t we?
5. New year with a complete team. People who start working early in the year had to interview for the job in November or December, not in January. Hiring managers and recruiters have a sense of urgency related to staffing at the end of the year. They do not want to begin the new year with a staffing deficit.
You should take some time for yourself to enjoy the holidays, but don’t give up your job search. It is a good time for it!
