I briefly stayed at Shanghai Jiao Tong University approximately one year to pursue my academic career. I was the course coordinator for the physical chemistry lab in the undergraduate physical chemistry program, which has over students. I also cosupervised two graduate students with other colleagues within the chemistry department.

Professor HW. just joined the University of Texas in . I was the first researcher he hired to work in his group. Although it was quite challenging to start from the scratch at the time for me, it was also a fantastic opportunity for me to learn how to successfully establish and run a research group. Our work within two years leaded to publications.

  • Theoretical study on the mechanism of catalytic reaction on clean/modified metallic surface
  • Introduced the planewave pseudopotential method to solve chemistry problems in the mid of last nineties. This method has become the popular way to investigate condensephase materials now.
  • Revealed the relationship between the electrolytic silver surface properties and their performance in catalysis.
  • Screened modifiers to enhance the activity of silver catalysts.
  • Correctly explained the adsorption properties of CO on Pt with the hybrid DFT method.

  • Chemical reactions on TiO oxide surfaces
  • Investigated the interaction of Au nanoparticles with TiO rutile surface because nanosized Au cluster on TiO surface was found to have high performance in catalysis.
  • Identified the adsorption and diffusion of oxygen species on reduced TiO , which were very important to understand the role of oxide surface on oxidation.
  • Explore the fluorination process on the photoactive anatase TiO surfaces.

  • Functionalization of semiconductor surfaces
  • Combined functional organic materials with semiconductor surfaces. The functionalized surfaces have been envisioned for potential microelectronic devices, as well as biological or chemical sensors. For the first time, we summarized the origin of nonlocal effects on combination processes at high coverage.
  • Investigated dopant effects on the properties and reaction mechanisms of semiconductor surfaces. Based on our results, a novel selfassembled method was predicted to produce nanowires on modified semiconductor surfaces.

  • Explained the STM images and other experimental observation of organic thiols on the Au surface.
