teamwork and common vision among the agents and support staff achieved the objective. Within two years, while the overall business showed a % growth, my personal portfolio grew % with a corresponding increase in profitability.
Business Unit Startups. Recruited on several occasions to lead the startup of new business units. Established a new Facultative Department at C.E.R., in Paris. Working with the CEO, created policies and systems while training staff to produce and underwrite a portfolio from the ground up. Achieved breakeven point and grew to a milliondollar scale in premiums within three years. Implemented the international operation startup at Mead. Responsibilities included strategic planning, personnel management and staff professional development, while operating as the chairman&;s "Chief of Staff." At F+G Re, the reinsurance subsidiary of USF+G, personal mandate was to develop the international market for this new reinsurance industry contender. Complexities involved skepticism of foreign clientèle toward US providers in general especially new or smaller players. Reoriented underwriting from facultative case by case to treaty entire portfolio classes. Through consistent image marketing and customerforlife strategies, the company became a reinsurer of choice. Involved in the founding and development of Arch Re in Bermuda. Key member of the original startup team involved in planning the reinsurance operations of Arch Group and the international nonUS development of Arch Reinsurance. Subsequently involved in the planning for another startup firm in the BVI and Bermuda. Formalization of marketing plans, operating procedures and underwriting guidelines.
Portfolio Development. Entrusted with the profitable management of the international Per Risk Excess portfolio as an integral member of the F+G executive team. Tasks included indepth evaluation and approach of specific ceding companies to "partner" in developing Per Risk business and the creation of computer models to assist this niche underwriting arena. Became market lead underwriter for this line, far exceeding plan profitability on yearoveryear averages of over $ million in business. Change Agent. Company restructuring required significant downsizing in the European market. Sensitivity to each country&;s political and economic relationships allowed retention of key accounts while closing various facilities. Operational control was transferred to the Paris office at a greatly reduced overhead expense. Market Expansion. Recruited by PXRE to diversify the portfolio beyond catastrophe underwriting, my greatest achievement was to turn around the image of a company poorly regarded in the marketplace. Through sales persistence and "buck stops here" customer service, the newly diversified international portfolio grew from $ million to $ million annually, spanning the three years of my tenure.
