Mayo Innovation Scholars
Mayo Clinic and Minnesota Private
Worked with a group of two
science and two business majors, an MBA student and faculty adviser.
We are researching a project
submitted by Mayo Clinic professionals in order to assess their clinical
usefulness and marketability.
Once we have arrived at
a proper analysis, we presented our analysis and decision to the Principal
Investigators, Licensing Managers, mentors and other students.
Almost all science classes
were accompanied with a lab component.
Participated in independent
research for a Systems biology class. Here I combined my chemistry and
biology background in studying iron concentrations in N. meningitidis
biofilms and changes in iron related genes in different iron environments.
This consisted of bioinformatics, Atomic Absorption Spectral analysis
of iron, cellular methods in biofilm growth, coculture transwells experiments,
plating of strains in agar plates, quantification of cells, gel electrophoresis,
PCR as well as RealTime PCR and Microarrays in determining relative
Performed chemical identification,
isolation and synthesis experiments as part of a pet molecule project
in organic chemistry. Other chemistry labs exposed me to titrations,
spectral analysis UVVIS, GCMS, proton and carbon NMR, FTIR chromatography
HPLC and other methods.
Was a recipient of the Centennial
Grant Research award to research with a faculty mentor and student partner.
We sought to determine the role of cortactin in learning and memory
consolidation in rats; using behavioral and molecular methods such as
radial arm maze, passive avoidance, western Immunoblotting, RNA extraction
Attended a weekly journal
club and learned new scientific techniques.
Wrote a paper and presented
our results at the Centennial Research Scholars Lecture in Oct. .
Attended the National Conference
of Undergraduate Research NCUR poster presentation in April .
Presented a poster at the
“Private Scholars at the Capitol” meeting in St. Paul, MN.
